The Women's Development Cell (WDC) of Government Degree College (GDC) Kangan organised an awareness programme on "The Status of Women in Contemporary Times" on 14 March, in continuation of the celebrations marking International Women's Day (8 March). The programme aimed to create awareness among students about gender equality, women's empowerment, and the continuing challenges faced by women despite significant progress across various fields. The event was organised under the guidance of the college administration and witnessed active participation from faculty members and students. The programme sought to encourage critical reflection on gender norms and the evolving role of women in society. The programme was led by Dr. Aatina Nasir Malik, Convener of the Women's Development Cell, who spoke extensively about the deeply entrenched gendered norms and cultural expectations that continue to shape women's lives. Despite these constraints, she emphasised that women have continuously challenged these barriers and made remarkable strides in diverse spheres such as education, politics, science, sports, arts, and entrepreneurship. Dr. Aatina Nasir Malik underlined that while the achievements women across the world reflect growing empowerment and visibility, gender discrimination still persists in subtle and overt forms. She pointed to issues such as unequal opportunities, stereotypes, gender bias in workplaces, and the continuing burden of unpaid care work, which collectively shape women's experiences in contemporary society. Focusing on this year's theme, "Give to Gain," Dr. Malik stressed the importance of collective responsibility and mutual support in advancing gender equality. The event concluded with an interactive discussion in which students shared their perspectives on the challenges faced by women today and the ways in which awareness and education can contribute to building a more equitable society. Through initiatives such as this, the Women's Development Cell of GDC Kangan continues to play an important role in promoting gender awareness and fostering an environment that encourages equality, empowerment, and critical engagement related to women and society.
