1. Departmental Overview

Established in 2011, the Department of Environmental Science at Government Degree College Kangan was founded with a mission to foster environmental literacy among students in the pristine yet ecologically sensitive district Ganderbal. As an integral part of the college’s academic framework, the department strives to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical environmental stewardship.

2. Faculty Information

The department is currently led by dedicated academic leadership:

  • Waseem Yaseen, Assistant Professor (Permanent Faculty)
  • Focus: The faculty member oversees all academic instructions, orientations, and the coordination of the college’s Eco-club (Environmental cell).

3. Courses Offered

The department provides comprehensive environmental education as per the University of Kashmir’s curriculum:

  • Ability Enhancement Compulsory Course (AECC): A mandatory environmental studies module for all undergraduate students (1st and 2nd Semesters).
  • Multi-disciplinary Course: To undergraduates for understanding environmental issues by combining knowledge  from different field.
  • Skill Courses: Specialized papers like Disaster Management for students pursuing degree in arts streams.

The department is a cornerstone of the college’s "Green Campus" initiative. Its contributions include:

  • Environmental Awareness: Maintaining a year-round calendar dedicated to educating students on environmental deterioration and climate change.
  • Civic Responsibility: Mentoring students on the role of a "Responsible Citizen" in mitigating local environmental issues, such as waste management and water conservation of the nearby Sindh River.
  • Field Studies: Conducting local field visits to help students document biodiversity and understand the fragile Himalayan ecosystem.

  • World Environment Day (June 5th): Massive plantation drives and cleanliness campaigns.
  • World Water Day: Seminars on the preservation of local water bodies.
  • Ozone Day & Earth Day: Awareness rallies, poster competitions, and guest lectures.
  • Cleanliness Drives: Regular "Swachh Bharat" activities within and outside the campus including regular cleaning of adopted waterbody (Nallah Sindh) adjascent to college.
